Dynamic DNA Webquest - DNA
- You find DNA in the nuclues.
- DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid.
- DNA comes in the shape of a twisted ladder which is called a double-helix spiral.
- The base A will only pair with T, and C with G.
- The sides are made out of Sugar Phosphate.
- The bases stand for Guanine, Thymine, Cytosine, Adenine.
Genes
- Genes are instruction manuals for our bodies.
- Genes are made of DNA
- A gene called hemoglobin is responsible for our red blood-cells to carry oxygen.
- If the hemoglobin protein is normal it works fine, but if it is mutated or changed it could result in Sickle Cell Anemia
- True, DNA determines eye color.
Chromosomes
- If you pulled out the DNA from one cell it would be three meters long or as long as a car.
- The DNA fits in tightly packed units called chromosomes.
- Chromosomes are storage units for DNA.
- True, different organisms have different amounts of chromosomes.
- Human Cells have 46 Chromosomes.
- You receive 23 chromosomes from each of our parents.
- Males have an X and Y chromosome but females only have X's.
- A mosquito has 6 chromosomes. A onion has 16 chromosomes and a carp has 104 chromosomes.
DNA Replication
- DNA is the molecule that holds genetic information. DNA makes an exact copy of itself whenever a cell divides.
- We are located in the nucleus.
- The first step is to unwind, then untwist and then unzip.
- It unzips through the middle.
- Adenine goes with Thymine and Cytosine always go with Guanine.
