Ocean Research
Runoff:
- Runoff- rainwater that flows into the ocean.
- Pollution main problem- grass with fertilizer, pollution in air and others.
- Soil acting as filter and with paved roads means that no cleaning.
- Ocean gets polluted.
Dead Zones:
- Dead zones are an reduced level of oxygen.
- Gulf of mexico is second largest Dead Zone.
- An excess of plants cause this.
- Fertilizer taken in by algae and than die, because of lack of fertilizer, and are decomposed by bacteria which uses a lot of oxygen leaving a lot of oxygen out.
Waste Disposal:
- Waste disposal is basically dumping trash in water.
- Industrial revolution caused a chemical pollution
- Humans caused it
- Plants will die because of chemicals dumped into the ocean
Artificial Reefs:
- An artificial reef is an object dropped on the ocean floor for different purposes.
- Humans put ships, blocks of concrete, etc.
- It grows like this:
- Phytoplankton
- Small Fish
- Big Fish
- Algae
- Over fishing on fish that are attracted to artificial reefs.
Oil Spills:
- Oil spills are the release of liquid oil into the ocean.
- Mostly human causes.
- It affects sea life and humans.
- Birds can get there wings immobilized, Whales there blow holes covered.
Over fishing:
- Fishing to much can cause a wipe out of a species of fish.
- It is the humans fault.
Climate Change
- Climate change is when something drastic happens to the climate.
- Global Warming is an example.
- CO2 affects the earth
- Sea level will rise 2 feet. Eliminating 10,000 miles gone.
- Humans have increased 1/3 of CO2
- Salinity of the oceans will decrease.
Human Dependence
- Plankton/algae that live in the water produce 50% of the O2 in the world.
- Limiting food source of fish
- Freshwater is from the ocean.
- Medicines, precious metals, oil, etc. are found in the ocean
